Glu has released a Mobile game version of Speed Racer, which is based on the new movie from Warner Bros.
The game is a 3D high-speed racing-fest, with a ton of drifting/sliding, jumping, and all-round driving fun - there are apparently "unique racing courses with slaloms and banks providing a brand-new type of racing experience".
Check out the screenshot below:

If you want to give it a try, I suggest going here, where you can play the game running in an emulator embedded in to the webpage. Happy racing!

Hands-On Mobile has announced a Mobile game, and associated content, based on the new Iron Man film.
This isn't the first time Hands-On Mobile has created Mobile games based on films - they also did "X-Men: The Last Stand" and "Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer" - in addition to which, they will also be doing a game based on the new Hulk film!
The game is a vertical-scroller shoot-em-up, as you can see from the screenshot below. Players will apparentl visit numerous locations, including some from the movie, whilst basically shooting everything that moves.

It's nice to see additional content based on good initial content - in this case the Iron Man film - I thought it was the best Super Hero movie I had seen in a very long time. Of course, I'm not counting out the new Hulk film, which looks nothing short of….er…..incredible!

Mobile Broadband, Three

3UK's 3G-USB dongle can now be bought for £49.99, less than half it's original price. The dongle war appears to be hotting up, with this being the latest in a series of announcement by the various UK Operators to try and get customers on board with their offering.
3UK's dongle are made by ZTE and Huawei - and were first to market - since then, all the other (main) operators have launched an offering, and now the market is awash with deals - unsurprising really when the dongles have been the success story of 2008, with stellar sales!

Prepary customers will apparently have 3 tariff options:
- 1GB for £10
- 3GB for a £15 add-on (the most popular)
- 7GB for £25
All of the allowances last for 30 days. If you want to find out more, go here.

UK retail

Phones 4U, which is a popular highstreet retailer in the UK, is apparently facing an investigation for alleged misselling, according to the FT. Phones 4U has over 440 stores in the UK, generated sales of £755mn in 2007 - as you can see then, a major player…..
Ofcom, the UK Telecoms regulator, has said that it has had numbers of complaints about misrepresentation, hidden charges, and so-called "cashback" offers, which have proved to be unclaimable.
Ofcom has said it will provide a judgment on it's findings within 6 months - and Phones 4U has said it will comply with all requests for information.

GPS/Sat Nav
TomTom has been cleared by the EC to acquire mapping company TeleAtlas. TeleAtlas provides digital maps and content forms the core of many Nav and LBS (location-based services) offering - Google Maps for example! TomTom on the other hand has sold nearly 20 mn ddevices, mostly the Sat Nav units.
Since last year, TomTom has been utilising both user-generated content and TeleAtlas mapping to inform it's MapShare service, allowing users to feeback details of changes or errors on routes - kinda like a wikipedia for maps - well sort of.
This represents a canny move by TomTom - with the advancement of GPS/Sat Nav on to Mobile devices, anyone in the purely hardware game is going to be facing a tough time - Nokia predicts sales of 35 mn devices with GPS on this year alone! The big three "traditional GPS" vendors - TomTom, Garmin, and Navman - account for 80% of the market currently - a market the handset vendors want a (big) piece of!
Will peoples' requirements for "convergence" (multiple services on one device) lead to the traditional GPS vendors being edged out over time? It's anyone's guess, but one thing I do know is that my current TomTom unit is still in use for Sat Nav duties - for now…….!
(Note: if anyone from TomTom, or any of the other manufacturers for that matter, wants to send me a review unit to test against a Mobile device, please do feel free - we are always open to giving our readers reviews of what device is best at a given feature!)

VoIP

Nimbuzz (a small company from the Netherlands) has launched Mobile VoIp in the UK. The app apparently aggregates user logins/contacts from a shed-load of online IM services and social networks, including Skype, MSN, Google Talk, Yahoo!, AIM, Jabber, ICQ, Facebook, Myspace, and several others.
Nimbuzz also apparently works on 90+ handsets, including the Series60 and WinMo O/S devices, plus the mass-market Java ones too. Nimbuzz states it has 500K users, generating more than 1 mn logins per week - impressive stats!

I've checked out the site (you can too, here) and it's clean, and nicely-designed - certainly worth a look if you are considering a trial of Mobile VoIP at the moment.

Samsung, Devices, Announcements
The iPhone's design is easily recognizable around the world. There's no denying Apple's ability to churn out eye-pleasing creations that have tech-heads drooling for more clean lines and minimalist style. But, that doesn't mean we can't have Apple-like design and those high-end features that those Asians are so damn good at packing into a handset - all in an eye-catching package.
The Samsung SGH-i900 brings together the best of both worlds, and it does it in style. With a full-body, 3.5-inch (240×400) touchscreen and Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional, the Samsung i900 gives Windows Mobile fans a chance to one-up iPhone owners. And, with a feature-set that includes HSDPA, WiFi, FM radio, 5 megapixel camera, TV-out, 16GB of onboard storage, microSDHC card slot, and Bluetooth 2.2 with A2DP - all packed into a 112×56×13mm package, the Samsung i900 easily outpaces the current iPhone's meager offerings. And, there's some sort of fingerprint-scanner/touch-sensitive navigation pad at the bottom of the display. Touch-sensitive navigation pads have proven more gimmicky than useful, but we'll hold off judgment until we get a change to put hands on this device.

That said, the shiny, metallic-finished Samsung i900 should drop in two variants - one branded with Samsung and the other sporting Anycall-branding.

BlackBerry, RIM, Devices
There's just something about superstar recording artists/songwriters that make them attractive first-run candidates to get their hands on unreleased mobile phones and other mobile gadgets. John Mayer is definitely a superstar and he definitely gets his hands on all the coolest gear before any of us mere mortals.
So, it's not all that surprising that he posted pictures of his brand new factory-blessed BlackBerry 9000 Bold on his blog. John is apparently impressed with not only the high-resolution display, but also the fonts that RIM decided to use on the BlackBerry Bold. Font-type is a bit of a strange critique-point, but John proclaims himself a font-whore, so we'll let him slide on that one.

The rest of us will just have to wait for AT&T to drop their variant of the BlackBerry Bold.[Via: John Mayer Blog]

MediaFLO, Announcements, Mobile TV
Qualcomm isn't going to let the European Commission block them out of the mobile TV market just because the EU is officially backing DVB-H mobile TV standards. To that end, Qualcomm has just snatched up a 40Mhz swath of L-Band spectrum in the UK for $16.3 million. The purchase will apparently let Qualcomm test their MediaFLO network in the UK in hopes of proving to the general public (and government regulators) that MediaFLO can hang with the DVB-H standard.
The push to bring MediaFLO to the UK is significant, although no where near what Qualcomm is investing in to the US mobile TV market. Qualcomm is putting up $800 million to build out their MediaFLO network in The States, with Verizon Wireless and AT&T on-board to use the mobile TV network.
Still, the purchase of spectrum solely for MediaFLO could help Qualcomm bring MediaFLO to the forefront of mobile TV service in the UK. "Could" being the operative word here.
“Acquiring this spectrum will enable us to develop, test and explore a variety of innovative wireless services and technologies that will benefit European consumers and the wireless industry as a whole,” said Andrew Gilbert, executive VP for Qualcomm.

Windows Mobile, Applications, Announcements
Windows Mobile Live Search fans will be glad to hear that Microsoft has just updated their popular Live Search application with expanded features and Windows Mobile 6.1 support. Live Search should be installed on all Windows Mobile phones, in my opinion. So it's good to see that WM6.1 is now fully compatible with the integrated search tool.
The new Windows Live Search takes the tried and true local search, maps, driving directions, traffic info, gas prices, and movie times formula and has added:
- weather information
- Web search
- an archived search function
- Windows Mobile 6.1 compatiblility
- Bluetooth headset support speech-recognition
Grab your copy of the new Windows Live Search from http://wls.live.com.
